i set off for the front when i was very young
i had heard all my life of the songs that were sung
and i'd wish to join in but i'd hold my tongue
i'd stand to the side silently
i remember my father he told me my son
'you'll arrive at the end and you wont have begun'
then he put on his shoes and he started to run
i never saw him again
and the old black waters they crumble and burn
after all our mistakes you thought we’d have learned
and we’re only promised there’s no return
we’re all gonna die
lonely and cold
we’ll all die together
lonely, cold, and alone
so i laced up my boots and i walked through the town
saw the boys with their guns and the girls spinning round
i searched there for hours but naught could be found
i don't know what i had hoped to find
and we’ll march to our doom at the break of the dawn
what was it i hoped to have stumbled upon?
now i'm sure i wont know this and soon i'll be gone
and i'll never see you again
